Title: Technical issues
Post by: Cate on August 20, 2024, 09:19:01 AM
Rather than bombarding Tru with PMs that may be similar or typing about technical issues in our diaries this could be the place to mention any technical issues we are having with our new forum. I'll start.
Can the edit function be extended to 24 hours (maybe just for founding members if that's possible)?

How long would members like to be able to edit posts ? turning off member editing is usually an anti spam measure which is not a problem at the moment.

Maybe if spam becomes an issue unlimited editing could also be something people can earn through a certain amount of posts? For now it could just be for everyone, I think.

I have increased the edit time to a full 24 hours just to see how it goes

Thanks! I was going to reply to that earlier but had to check something first so I saved my draft and when I came back it was gone, both from the quick reply box and from the full one. Do you happen to know if it's hidden under a button somewhere?

I have not gone hunting around the draft settings much so I am not sure.

Thanks, Tru. Personally I think 24 hours is good. I lost a draft today too. It wouldn’t post so I clicked on save draft but when I went back later to try again it wasn’t to be found. It’s not something I would normally do so I don’t care much & if we can all go back & edit for 24 hours it probably won’t be an issue.
I would love to go back & edit at any time as I hate seeing my typos.

Definitely no rush with the draft thing. It is now my turn to have lost the like button. Also: the research thread is not just pinned but also locked so only mods and admins can post/reply. Was that intentional?
Edit: the like button has returned and apparently pushed itself on the last couple of replies. One less thing to worry about.

The idea with the research thread was just an explanation for the section, each article/research should have its own thread so they can be easily referenced and discussed individually rather than a super thread where everything gets mixed together

9 times out of 10 the forum is working properly for me now. The 24 hour edit option is good, I think & the like button reappeared later the same day for me.

Cate asked about being able to edit anonymously, members with global moderator permissions can now remove the edited by tag on posts

I just noticed that the Quick Reply now has all the options, rather than having to click on preview. Thanks, Tru.

Upside I made a quick note on my phone & found my login password.

Thanks for setting this up Tru, no small task I am sure.
How long would members like to be able to edit posts ?
I'd prefer no time limit, or as long as you can give us.

I am just feeling things out, so far the only problems I have noticed are the format I see, sometimes just lines not what it is supposed to be, and I have not figure out how to like messages.  The format looks fine today, so maybe that one is fixed.  I am sure it will get easier as I get used to it.  Will post any ideas or suggestions that occur to me, but so far it looks pretty good!

Liking doesn't become available until you've made/replied to... I think it's 20 posts. You'll be there before you know it :)

I am not sure why the text only version shows up sometimes, I tweaked the cache settings to try and speed things up and reduce it happening, At this point I am not sure why it happens sometimes but I will do more if/when I figure out why.

The text only view only happens occasionally with me now :)

At least I know the text view works correctly, which is important for meeting accessibility standards.

Still having trouble with the lines appearing rather than the way it is supposed to look.  Am I doing something wrong?  Or is there some way I can fix this?

Got a screen shot of what I see, but can't figure out how to post it.  Well, maybe I did...

Thanks rob, I am pulling my hair out trying to work it out, I am not getting anything in the error logs. on my own browser it happens occasionally but when I switch browsers it is ok. It also comes good if I refresh a few minute later.

I am not sure I am techy enough to find what is causing the intermittent fault. I tried changing the way the cache works but has not seemed to fix it, I will keep trying things but it may take some time to find the solution.

Just a thing I have noticed & it may not be the same for everyone. My messages take quite a while to send & I have to be patient so if you are sending a private message just press send or post & hold back a while to give it time. It will say when it is sent.
Also, if you tap on the home button it offers
Help
Search
Members
Recent posts
If you tap on the home button again it will then show you all of the headings, topics etc

Hey Tru, I really appreciate what you are doing.  No criticism meant, you're doing great!  And you certainly are more "techy" than I am.

I think the problem is getting less for me.  I sometimes have the problem on other websites, that's why I wondered if it was something I'm doing.

As an experiment I have been switching from Chrome to Edge to Firefox when I get the plain text view & when I have it anywhere I have it everywhere. I just did it again as I had text only on Chrome & the same on Edge but on Firefox it was normal so I looked again at the other two & they had switched back as well. So now I can see the forum as it should be on all 3 platforms.

@Trusylver -I am so grateful for this forum & can't thank you enough! I am going to spend some time working out why I get text view rather than html but it's about 50/50 these days. I just go away & come back & often it's switched. Today it has been much better.

Marsia is going to have a "goof around" sometime & see if she can work out why it's happening. I found this site that might help. https://www.basedash.com/blog/why-is-my-html-code-showing-up-as-text
If I get to the computer service place this week I'll ask them to look at it for me. Usually when I log onto my computer I see text only but it rights itself within an hour.
The New Posts tab doesn't work for me no matter what view I'm in & I usually use the diaries bookmark I have saved to view diaries & then the little green "new" is visible & I go to them that way. I don't know if this happens to anyone else.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why I get text view so often. It switches backwards & forwards a lot. I'll be posting in the text view & then when I click on post it's switched again & that can happen many times. Does that happen with many people?
I wish I knew someone here who could have a look for us. It's probably an easy fix if you know how, like most things. If_you_know_how - I don't have a clue.
I love how easy it is to drag & drop a photo when you click on reply, rather than quick reply & I think that works even in text view.

It could be related to server speed or general internet slowness. When the internet is slow on other sites I see the text version more often

I had never seen it before. It’s a mystery.

Liza posted this in her diary, which I had trouble reading as I had been switched back to text view, but thought I would just copy and paste as is-
"ps i think one of the funny technical issues is that some of us cannot view the 'general discussion' section when logged in...which includes the 'technical issues' section...that means we can't post technical issues...I don't really care for myself, but maybe an easy change in the settings...
But yeah I was reading the 'technical issues' section when logged out and I don't think the text view that shows up for some of us randomly has anything to do with internet speed as this is the only site I've ever had that issue with and I do have really good internet..."

The not being able to read the General Discussion section when logged in for some people is probably just a matter of permissions. The text view is such a random thing. Mine chops & changes all of the time.
Quick edit: It just switched back to HTML when I posted it *sigh*

I can't seem to post anything to my album.  When I try to post I get the message "Undefined array key 1".

Am I doing something wrong?

I also get an error message when I try and recover my password to log in. when I try and send the recovery email to reset my password I get a message about already asking for it less than 30 seconds ago but its never sent no matter how long I wait or even if its requested for the first time.

the e-mail system is a bit wonky with the hosting. I have turned off most e-mail related functions.

I will try and work out what is triggering the array problem

I haven't checked if the error was still there  because I was able to look up my password on my laptops chain and got it working on my phone without the recovery. wish I stayed with my apple phone rather than getting android. all apple devices play so well together especially when passwords are concerned. Also ive never had the text view problem with my MacBook Air laptop. It uses safari browser.

Hi, Tru. I posted a message regarding text view on the Elkarte forum & got some decent feedback. The link to the conversation is here-

The forum has been in text view & behaving very weirdly for quite some time now. A few of us have been getting huge house icons that take up all of the screen and it's only rarely that we get HTML. I have noticed a few people have gone back to the old forum, mainly for that reason I think. Does anyone know anyone who could let us know what can be done to fix it?
